Tickhill 50 Years Ago

Five volumes of local newspaper cuttings covering the 1950s to the 1970s have been donated to our Archive. The following selection of cuttings focuses on some of Tickhill’s news in March 1960.

Doncaster Chronicle, 3 March 1960

Tickhill Youth Management committee held their monthly meeting at the Library, Tickhill, last Thursday. The Secretary, Mr E Webster, reported that Dr Coutts-Wood had agreed to a request from the Committee to give talks on first-aid to members of the Youth Club as soon as arrangements could be made. A lawn tennis section sub-committee was formed including Messrs K Nicholson, G Roylance, W Davies and Mrs Marrison (late Assistant Youth Officer) who is a qualified coach. A deputation from Tickhill Rovers Association Football Club was welcomed, and after discussion, their suggestion for joint training sessions between members of Tickhill Rovers Club and the Youth Club, to be held in the Boys’ Club premises in inclement weather, was agreed to. These training sessions are to include talks and instruction on the rules of Association football and their proper interpretation by a league referee who has consented to officiate. Since the formation of the Youth Club it has been the ultimate aim of the Management Committee to provide a full and complete Youth Centre in Tickhill. A site has been obtained from Lord Scarbrough on a long lease. It is adjacent to the Boys’ Club premises in Bride Church Lane which has been cleared of a derelict cottage by Youth Club members. A building fund for the erection of a youth centre has been opened. The President, Coun. E Robinson, subscribed £10, Committee member Concah £10, secretary E Webster £10, chairman A E Pike £1 and the Boys’ Football section £1. The fund is open to all and it is hoped to publish future subscriptions and the current total from time to time.

Tickhill National Savings Committee held their annual dinner in the Millstone Hotel last week.  Mr F S Newborn presided. Long-service badges were presented by Mr J Dean, the Commissioner, to Mrs N MacCallaugh, Mrs D Garritt and Mrs F H Arrand. Other visitors included Mrs E Charlesworth, Assembly Member, and Mr T Durkin, District Commissioner.

COFFEE EVENING held in the Methodist schoolroom last Thursday realised £6 14s. 6d. for Trust funds. Miss Jessie Newborn gave a talk on the history of Tickhill.

There was a large congregation at the Parish Church on Sunday evening for the Mothering Sunday service. Violets and a simnel cake made specially by Mrs G Turner, were presented at the altar, blessed by the Vicar, distributed to children of the Sunday School, and taken by them as gifts to their parents in the congregation. Taking part were Philip Wilcox, Stephen Higgins, Cynthia Turner, Joy Lofthouse, Michael Lofthouse, Charles Marsden, Sharon MacDougall, Geoffrey Stables, Linda Cannings, Katherine Newsome, Elizabeth Towell, Ann Watkinson, Margaret Arrand, Peter Smith, Sara De’Ath, Raymond Fox, Jacqueline Evans, Robert Kitchen, Roger Kitching, Rosemary Hulley, Christine Hulley and Peter Stocks.

COFFEE EVENING and bring and buy stall organised by Mrs H Stimpson in the Public Library in aid of the Youth Club Building Fund raised £4.
