This page of advertisements, left, appeared in the August 1963 Parish Magazine. It is of interest for several reasons. Taylors shop was only one of several selling groceries, two more appear on this page alone. Grocers could also sell a variety of non-grocery products: Taylors acted as a florist and Turner's shop sold animal foods as well as drapery and hardware. A prominent advertisement is for The Dairy in St Mary's Gate which belonged to G W Count, a local farmer. Most of the shops listed telephone numbers and so the households who owned telephones could ring to place orders. Only 3 numbers were needed with no local code. This issue of the Parish Magazine was included in an album of photographs taken by George Read and donated to our Society last year by his daughter. Some of the photographs George took of local shops in 1987 are included below. |
