"Pop" Jeans was the only teacher ever to give me an "Excellent" mark in my report book. I think he lived in Hellaby.

Wow! Tony Barber and Tim Stone all at once! Tony and I have met since, but a cheery hello to Tim (I was on your right when Mr. Jeans sat at the front). Oh - 1B, I seem to remember.

A great school that made a massive difference to many pupils. I was lucky to be there 1962-1969. Fully agree with Paul Jowitt.
User: | Guest_Tim Stone (25.05.2016) |
Me and The Beatles spent our days here 1962-69.
User: | Guest_Tony Barber (23.03.2016) |
A very fine school in pleasant surroundings.
User: | Guest_Paul Newell (24.09.2015) |
It would be a shame I spent 3 happy years 1967-69 there.
User: | Guest_Graham Jackson (25.08.2015) |
I have just learned of this plan. Tragic! The expertise and ambience of this fine school in the 50,equipped a less than gifted pupil to make some small success in life.

This was a great school. I hear they want to demolish it! It might be best iof they built on its former reputation rather than demolish its past!

I was in 1B in 1961. Left in 1967. Recognise several of the names above. Will any of us ever forget Miss Hill?

User: | Guest_janice higginson (11.11.2018) |
Or Rosie Adams - 4 ft 10 ins if she was lucky and an absolute terror! Pratt Music and Pratt Maths. Tom Beastall, of course - the only man in history who could walk at an angle of 30 degrees. Dennis Siddall (spelling?).

User: | Guest_David England (28.02.2020) |
Was in same class as Mick Winch andAlan Tueman.Mr.Robbins was teacher.Anyone remember?
User: | Guest_Anon (02.03.2020) |
I remember Mr. Robbins, though I was never in his class. Mick Winch was from Thrybergh. His Dad was headmaster at the "big school" in Thrybergh. Alan Trueman lived on Newland Avenue, just "round the block" from me. Glen Brooks also lived on Newland Avenue. Brian Fuller lived on Braithwell Road directly opposite me. All five us were in The Origators Creed Beat Group, Sad to say Alan died a few years ago. Even sadder: that's all the information I have.

From my days at Maltby Grammar School, I recall Charlie Curtis, Richard Hempsall, and Geoff Snell, from the corner shop opposite the Buttercross. Also Geoff Jackson and Pete Jackson. Both Jacksons lived in Sunderland Place, but weren't related. Or if they were, they preferred to say they weren't. From nearby Austerfield, twin brothers, Roger and Fred Powell, who didn’t look like twins. Also from Austerfield (possibly Rossington) was Suzanne Hill. Definitely from Rossington were John Wooldridge and Dennis Simpson. They all came into Maltby on the same bus along with the Tickhillians. It must have taken forever.

Of the teachers I recall Tom Bestall, who lived in Tickhill, had been Head Boy at Maltby Grammar School and then came back as a teacher. I have vague recollections of him being connected in some way with Tickhill History Society. Although it could be old age and poverty that’s clouding my memory. Several years ago, as a guest, I attended a meeting of the Society, somewhere on Northgate, and encountered an old work colleague I hadn’t seen for many years. Ken Brown, or KGB as we called him was my form teacher for three years at Maltby Crags Junior Boys School. Classes 2A and 4A. Along with about a dozen others, I skipped 3A and spent two years in 4A. From time to time I saw Ken on his way home, catching a “Grammar School bus” at the Queens Corner.

I notice that the society was formed with the aim of building on the work of Tom Beastall. For what it’s worth, I went to Maltby Grammar School and Tom Beastall taught me (and others!) History. Thanks in great part to Tom, I managed to pass the GCE exams with good grades. Several years ago, I attended a meeting of the Society, presenting a history talk of my own. Not about Tickhill., I hasten to add. The meeting hall was on Northgate, and, among others I encountered an old work colleague I hadn’t seen for many years. Still on the subject of schools, Ken Brown, or KGB as we called him was my form teacher for three years at Maltby Crags Junior Boys School. Classes 2A and 4A. Along with about a dozen others, I skipped 3A and spent two years in 4A. Like Tom Beastall, Ken helped enormously with my efforts to pass exams; this time the Eleven Plus. From time to time I saw Ken on his way home from the Crags School, catching a “Grammar School bus” at the Queens Corner.
