Diamond Jubilee 1897

In common with many other communities, Tickhill decided to replace its old water pump with a new one, near the Buttercross, to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. This became a permanent reminder of Sunday 20 June 1897, Accession Day, which was marked by special church services when a new hymn written by the Bishop of Wakefield for the Jubilee, 'O King of Kings', was sung nation-wide. Among the events planned in Tickhill for 22 June, the day of public celebrations, were a bicycle parade, cricket match, fireworks and bonfire. The grounds of St Leonard's were made available for a tea for children and adults.

Queen Victoria's public appearances included a carriage ride to a short open-air service at St Paul's with troops from all over the Empire in attendance, and a visit to Sheffield on 21 May to open the new Town Hall which was seen as part of the Jubilee celebrations. Among the many Honours announced on 22 June, the Chief Magistrates of Leeds and Sheffield were renamed Lord Mayor and three towns were made cities: Nottingham, Bradford and Kingston-upon-Hull.
