Maud and her elder sister Ellen May, grew up in the large family home on Northgate. With her elder sister she joined the Primrose League, an organisation for spreading Conservative principles in Great Britain. They were elected honorary secretaries as well as working as wardens to encourage recruitment to the League in Tickhill.
