The Royal Oak in Northgate c.1914
Began as a beer house dating back to at least 1869 when it was occupied by the Green family, members of which are pictured above. Brewers Tennant Brothers acquired the property from Vernon Green in 1950.
Rt to Left Vernon Green, Fred Green, Harriet (Granny) Green, unknown, Alice Green (Sarah's daughter), neighbour's children. Horseman is Tommy Taylor (p/time employee of Charles Clarkson, grocer). Delivery horse - Turpin. (Note CT Clarkson on cart headboard)
The beerhouse, known as the Royal Oak on the east side of Northgate, photographed c1914. The sign reads ‘Royal Oak, Proprietress Harriet Green, Licensed retailer of beer, porter, tobacco, etc to be consumed on the premises’. Harriet Green may be the woman third right and the man in the apron, her son Sydney, who was the barman
