Corner of Castlegate and Westgate
|
The junction of Castlegate and Westgate: the corner on the right was known as Nan Yard Corner: the council-owned yard stored lime chippings for road repairs. The house on the left of the adjacent terrace was the Police House, in the early 20th century it was the home of Police Constable William Howard. John Hill, painter and decorator can be seen outside his premises, possibly with his son, Albert and granddaughter; the business had been established the 1880s. The photograph was taken before 1908 when the Millstone, which can be seen on the left, was rebuilt.
