Gatehouse
The gatehouse was built c1129-30, when Tickhill Castle’s fortifications were strengthened by Henry l; above the arch was a room where King Jean de Valois of France is alleged to have been held, following his capture at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 by Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward lll. Two cannons can be seen on the parapet on either side of the arch. The photograph was taken in black and white in the early 20th century , and was hand-tinted after processing
